They are always looking for perfection to take their next design further. Greg has accomplished this with his M1 series. Greg explains the blade: “It is a refined Tanto shape with a custom-style hollow grind, slight belly and recurve and a hint of a drop point. I call it a ‘Millennium Tanto’. The false edge on the spine improves penetration while maintaining strength." The blade is premium AUS 8 stainless steel with black titanium nitride non-reflective coating, with Razor-Sharp or Combination Razor-Sharp and Triple-Point™ Serrated edges. To aid grip, there are aggressive friction grooves on the thumb ramp and the Mako Flipper, which is a sleek blade guard when open. The flipper, plus dual checkered thumb studs,allow fast opening with either hand. The blade is San Mai III laminated steel. The new Magnum Tanto IX was created in response to popular demand for a longer Tanto. It severed three inches of manila rope in our new video "PROOF". The Magnum Tanto IX features a blade made from San Mai III.® What is San Mai III®? "San Mai" means "three layers", it is the term given to the traditional laminated blades used by the Japanese for swords and daggers. Laminated construction is important because it allows different grades of steel to be combined in a single blade. A simple way to think of this type of construction is to imagine a sandwich: The meat center is hard, high carbon steel and the pieces of bread on either side are the lower-carbon, tough side panels. The edge of the blade should be hard to maximize edge holding ability, but if the entire blade was hard it could be damaged during the rigors of battle. For ultimate toughness, the body of the blade must be able to withstand impact and lateral stresses. Toughness is generally associated with flexibility in steel, so that surprisingly, if an entire blade was made "tough" the edge would not be hard enough to offer superior edge holding. San Mai III® provides a superior blade with hard (higher carbon) steel in the middle for a keen, long lasting edge and tough (lower carbon) steel on the sides for flexibility. Lamination line -The San Mai III® lamination line marks the junction between two types of steel. This laminate is over 25% stronger than the incredibly tough AUS 8A stainless in the Tanto.
