Saving lives of personnel on downed aircraft is Job #1 for an emergency knife. A NavAir accident showed the inadequacy of standard issue knives. Emerson Knives was called on to produce a knife that performs the mission without fail or question. The result The blade is wide at the major cutting area to provide the strongest cross section to blade length ratio while still enabling the blade to be inserted under gear, bootlaces, webbing, etc. The point is a round safety tip to insure safety to the victim and user while being used in a high stress environment. The “wave" or “remote pocket opening feature" allows almost instantaneous one hand deployment to an open and ready position if any emergency or injury requires instantaneous one hand blade opening. It is faster than an automatic “switch blade" with none of the inherent failure points like buttons, springs or mechanisms. The blade also features a round thumb disc to allow conventional one hand operation. The grip is designed with a deep recessed finger choil where the user’s index finger may seat to prevent accidental slippage of the hand towards the cutting area of the knife. The handle is ergonomically designed for proper hand placement and thumb position. The user’s thumb rests on top of the grooved ramp at the top of the blade and this places the index finger in the choil, which automatically places the knife in the most advantageous cutting position in the hand. It provides a positive index for positioning and feel, even with gloves on,or in an extremely cold environment where feeling is compromised. The knife is comfortably used in a reversed grip position (knife blade forward but upside down with edge toward ceiling).
